What happens in a hypnotherapy session?

It starts with a conversation

Before anything else, we have a free 20-minute chat. We talk about your challenges and how you’d like things to be different. I’ll ask a few questions, get a clear picture of where you are, and let you know honestly whether I think hypnotherapy will be a good fit for your goals.

If I feel confident I can help, I’ll talk you through exactly how I’d approach things for your specific situation.

What a typical program looks like

Most people and most goals require a short program of 3 hypnotherapy sessions.

The sessions are typically placed about a week apart. This gives enough time to go back into life and notice what’s changed, while keeping enough momentum for the change you want to create.

Each session lasts between 60 and 75 minutes, depending on the time you need.

A program of 3 sessions typically looks like this:

Session one: We go deeper into what you want to change, why it hasn’t shifted yet, and what’s actually keeping it in place. You’ll experience real change in the session — and the homework is simply to notice how things are different over the coming days.

Session two: Starts with feedback on how things have improved. We work on anything that’s come up since the first session and then build on the changes.

Session three: Consolidates everything. We check in on where you are, lock in the changes, and make sure you’re where you need to be.

What hypnosis actually feels like

Let’s kill the myth first.

TV and Hollywood have given most people the impression that hypnotherapy involves some kind of loss of control — that you might say something embarrassing, or forget everything that happened. None of that.

You’re fully aware throughout. You’ll hear everything I say and remember as much as you would from any normal conversation. It’s a guided, interactive process — I lead you through it, but you’re the one doing the work.

Within the first few minutes, most people notice a shift. Shoulders drop. Breathing slows. A stillness settles in that a lot of people haven’t felt in a long time.

Some describe it as deeply calm — a heavy, melting-into-the-chair kind of relaxation. Others say it feels light, almost floaty, like something they’ve been carrying just lifts a little.

That feeling isn’t the point. It’s just what happens when your brain moves into a state of focused relaxation — highly calm and highly alert at the same time. An ideal learning state.

Why it works when other things haven’t

Most approaches to change work at the conscious level — willpower, analysis, talking it through. And if that was going to work, it probably would have by now.

Hypnosis works differently. It goes directly to the unconscious mind — the part running your habits, fears, and automatic responses. In that deeply relaxed state, that part of your mind becomes receptive to something new. Old pattern released. New one adopted.
